CIW is pleased to announce a new grant round to support intellectually creative publication workshops on a China-related theme.

Eligibility

Funding is available to support focussed workshops that promote understanding of China and the Chinese world.

Preference will be given to applications that involve more than one ANU academic.

All ANU faculty are eligible to apply. A publication plan (e.g. special issue journal or edited volume) is essential.

Funding available

Funding up to a value of $50,000 is available for the following range of activities:

  • Flights—direct, economy airfares between home location and Canberra. Flight changes, rerouting, and cancellation costs are not eligible.
  • Accommodation—ANU accommodation is the preferred provider, with a daily rate of 100 AUD. Advanced booking is required.
  • Catering for lunch, morning and afternoon teas. Coffee breaks can be planned for more people to enable participation of students and other academics, public servants, businesspeople.
  • Reasonable costs for streaming, recording, and photography—event photos to be shared with CIW for use in its reporting to government. Consent should be sought from attendees before the workshop takes places.
  • Advertising and promotional materials, including minor costs such as Facebook advertising, name badges and printing of conference packs.
  • Welcome to Country costs.
  • A reasonable level of secretarial assistance before and during the workshop
  • Participation of academics with childcare responsibilities—funding to provide for childcare services. It is the responsibility of the conference organisers to make these arrangements.
  • Cost for one official dinner.

CIW workshop awards WILL NOT support:

  • Cost of venue hire. Events should be held on the ANU campus. Should organisers wish to hold the workshop in the CIW Seminar Room, please contact CAP Facilities (cap.facilities@anu.edu.au) for room availability.
  • Speakers’ fees. Fees and honoraria for participants are not allowable costs.
  • Fees for professional event organisers are not allowable
  • Indirect/overhead costs are not permissible. Only direct costs may be included in the budget.

Evaluation criteria

Each application will be evaluated against the criteria listed below.

Required

  • A completed application form and relevant supporting documents that observe word-limit requirements.
  • A clear publication plan outlining the type(s) of publications to be pursued
  • Explanation of the project’s contributions to the scholarly literature and to the development of China studies nationally and internationally.
  • A list of proposed participants/contributors, highlighting track records and their proposed contributions to the publication, with demonstrated consideration to diversity.
  • A carefully considered budget that includes clear justifications and rationales for all proposed expenditures and that demonstrates clear value for money. Leveraging of other funding sources is also desirable. All budgets must conform with ANU policies. Please seek guidance and assistance with the budget from your local Finance Team.

Decision process

Applications will be assessed on a competitive basis by a panel of ANU China studies’ specialists from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. The panel will be chaired by the CIW Director.

Submitting an application

The deadline for applications is Sunday 2 February 2025, 11:59 AEDT, for workshops to be carried out by the end of 2025. The expectation is that manuscripts should be submitted to a publisher within 6–12 months from the time of the workshop.
